Basement Mold

Basement Mold

Do you have mold in the basement of your South Bend, Fort Wayne, Plymouth, Warsaw, Auburn, or Marion home? If so, you likely have excessive moisture, and humidity found here, too. Mold in your basement doesn’t just look bad; it can also cause various health problems for you, your family, and even your pets! A&M SafeBasements has been working in the basement waterproofing business for years now and we make use of SafeBasements™ waterproofing systems

What Is Mold, And Why Do I Have It?

We get a lot of phone calls and e-mails from homeowners who want to know, “What is mold?“. Mold is a fungus that needs three things to grow and survive: moisture, high humidity levels, and organic material to feed off of. In a basement environment, the organic material is often storage boxes, carpets, rugs, curtains, old clothes, picture albums, and so on. Needless to say, these are things you don’t want to get ruined! If you see dark substances growing on the walls, floors, or any boxes or objects inside your basement, it’s likely mold. Please do not touch it with bare hands since the spores could get on your hands and on other items you touch.

What to look for:

  • Smells musty - similar to old, dirty gym socks
  • Grows on basement walls, floors, boxes, storage containers, pictures, clothes, holiday decorations, etc.
  • Dark green or black in color
  • May look "fuzzy"

Health Problems The Fungus Can Cause

Some of the known health problems which are are a direct result of basement mold growth include:

  • Skin rashes
  • Allergic reactions
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Asthma attacks
  • Breathing problems
  • Coughing and cold/flu-like symptoms

Fixing The Problem

To take care of the problem, the moisture and humidity problems will need to be addressed. We can install a waterproofing system to keep water at bay underneath your home, and we can also install a dehumidifier which will be able to control the amount of moisture found in the air (humidity). Both can be installed quickly, with minimal disruption to your daily life, and for a price that you can afford.

Sinking Foundation

This is the most common structural problem we come across. It’s typically caused by poor soil conditions around a home or bad materials or techniques used when the home was being built. A home built in clay-rich soils will be surrounded by dirt that quickly absorbs all kinds of moisture. As the soil absorbs the moisture, it expands, creating voids underneath and around your home. Eventually, your home will begin to settle into these voids, which could cause many problems. It may look like one or more sides of your home are sinking into the earth! Also, you may notice that windows and doors aren’t opening or closing as they should, and you may have stair-like cracks on your exterior brickwork. Regardless of what caused the settlement, A&M SafeBasements can install piers from SafeBasements™ to take care of the problem. We offer both helical and push piers.
